A rough portrait trailer edit of HAROLD ADLER
Harold Adler talks about the craft of type and lettering from an impressive career of hand-lettering in his work. His film title process (before major computer use) revolved around film 'opticals' – used for producing title art, optical efx & animation via analog cameras and the photo-chemical process, in post production.
The three films he talks about are: THE SEVEN YEAR ITCH, 1955 – directed by Billy Wilder, PSYCHO, 1960 – directed by Alfred Hitchcock and BONJOUR TRISTESSE, 1958 – directed by Otto Preminger
Harold Adler was Saul Bass's lettering artist for most of Bass's film title design career. He was also my mentor and hero before his passing.
Harold had a relentless dedication to craft that paralleled his generation, with a kind nature and genuine humility.
He is missed beyond expectation.
I hope to tell this story through film & exhibition while sharing a trove of extremely rare film art, artifacts and early title design history.
